Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Calling CPW, GOP and other 60's survivors

Cream-Puff-War and ghostofpig are remarkable forum writers to say the least...thought it would be interesting if CPW and GOP and any other 60's witnesses could come up with a show or 2 that they attended in common and give the rest of us a couple of different perspectives on the blast from the underground past

what you say gents?

i say bring it!

I did see the boys in GGPark in 67, but was just a youngin, and have no memory aside from the loudness and the multitude of humanity...

So, I have no first hand reflections to offer and we will have to hope that Cush, GoP or CPW, or others I am uncertain of agewise, post!

Good idea...

hey, good to get a punks perspective too...would like to hear more...and it would be interesting to know if Cream-Puff-War or Cush, or any of you lurkers (???????????) were also at GG park, and to read their perspectives...didn't realize GOP was on the other coast during this time

thanx for the replies...you guys are right, GOP post at Deadhook is one fascinating read...don't we all wish to be so lucky as to happen upon a magazine article like THAT while sitting in the dentist's waiting room?

About GG park, I saw the GD play there 2 times, in 1975 with the Jefferson Starship,
and at Bill Graham's Wake in 1991 when John Fogerty played CCR hits with the Dead backing him up.

The 1st live band I saw in the GG Park was the Youngbloods in I think late 1969 at a Peace Rally that followed a long march from the foot of Market Street.

I was so hungry, grumbling on route to my father's friend Greg Pehrson (who was at lot of the '67 era shows and esp. any free gigs).

Greg, ever the sarcastic wit, pointed out a half-eaten dirty loaf of french bread in the gutter, and said - "there you go, eat that, just wipe it off!"

I'd have none of it, not my piece of cake then.

I need to research the exact date of that Rally - it was the one where Fred Hampton or one of the Panthers shouted out from the GG Park stage, "Kill Nixon!" during his speech.

He was arrested for saying that the next day or so.

Update: a quick google search revealed this quote:

I can still hear Black Panther David Hilliard, speaking in Golden Gate Park in 1969, praising North Korea and declaring, “We will kill Richard Nixon, we will kill any motherfucker who stands in the way of our freedom!”

If that was late '69 then it was the 1st time I saw a live rock band...

The Youngbloods played "Get Together", it was a short set.

more words later.

Fred Hampton always makes me think of the following (and definitely directed at Nixon justice dept; sorry for the mini-hijack):

You explained it to me I must admit
But just for the record you were talkin' shit
Y'all rap about no knock bein' legislated
For the people you've always hated
In this hell hole you, we, call home

No knock, the man will say
To keep that man from beating his wife
No knock, the man will say
To keep people from themselves

No knockin', head-rockin', inter-shockin'
Shootin', cussin', killin', cryin', lyin'
And bein' white
No knock

No knocked on my brother Fred Hampton
Bullet holes all over the place
No knocked on my brother Michael Harris
And jammed a shotgun against his skull

For my protection?
Who's gonna protect me from you?
The likes of you?
The nerve of you?
Your tomato face deadpan
Your dead hands ending another freedom fan

No knockin', head rockin', inter-shockin'
Shootin', cussin', killin', cryin', lyin'
And bein' white

But if you're wise, no knocker
You'll tell your no-knockin' lackeys
Ha!
No knock on my brother's head
No knock on my sister's head
No knock on my brother's head
No knock on my sister's head

And double lock your door
Because soon someone may be no-knockin'
Ha, ha!
For you

(No knock: To be slipped into John Mitchell's suggestion box.)
No Knock - Gil Scott-Heron

no shit eh, GD backing Foggerty? that seems like a natural...anyone know of any recordings of that kicking around the net?

that 1969 GG Park scene sounded intense! no doubt the Youngbloods' short set was by design

the 1967 GG Park William described must have also been a trip and a half

and i was also a punk in the 60's...remember my older sister taking me to a couple of Toronto's Mariposa Folk Fest's at Centre Island...the memories of the music are all but a blur...hopefully the spirit of the experience remained intact

just now fully realizing how very few of you early era attending forumites there are...those of us who attended in the 80's probably couldn't name 1 show that another regular forumite and 10 lurkers didn't also attend...meanwhile, you "way back" cats may not be able to discover even 1 show that 2 or more of you attended

thanx, and...tell us more...

thanks midnight sun and y'all for providing me and the other way back forumites a thread we can go wild on!

The John Fogerty Grateful Dead GG Park show was simulcast on the radio - so it's gotta be around.

about a year or two ago I saw that it was posted online - was it on LMA?

It was instantly playable, but this may have been before the changes... maybe it was on sugarmegs, let me do a quick check.

Oh shit, the garage is flooded - hot water heater burst - Cyril Jordan is FREAKIN- gotta go!!

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: I was only a punk... we're Fortunate, Sun + how's Bayou

midnight sun,

IT'S HERE!

flame on with this Born On The Bayou - Oakee stuff if you're in the mood,
this is the last Great Grateful Dead show I ever saw.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd91-11-03.sbd.unknown.8727.sbeok.shnf

Yes, it's Fogerty jamming with the Dead. In GG Park.

It's Bill Graham's favorite band wishing he were here.
The stage wouldn't be the same without him.
He died before his time in an accident, that he should have avoided, but that's when it happens.
Impulse, rather than instinct, leads more often to sudden demise.
When you see it coming it's like, oh no... bam. An unnecessary chance, a roll of laughing Sam's dice.

The body and brain are mortal.
The legend lives on.

If there's a rock and roll heaven, then the line to get in just got a little longer. And at least one soul is looking towards the end of the queue.
They all want to see the final act, and now, some one wants them to see it too.

Golly! Waauugghhh!

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: 11/3/91 Bill G.'s Bayou

thanx for the link CPW...and i like your tribute to Bill Graham

good energy and vocals on the Foggerty tunes...not much from Jerry though...i thought that the Bayou and Green River could have easily turned into 20 minute jam vehicles (you know, like a rippin 60's Viola Lee...what am i sayin, of course you know), but it seems that John might not have been comfortable with that idea...all the same, both GD and Foggerty appear to be having a lot of fun with it

the song list looks like all one set (?) plus encores...interesting they honored Bill with a classic song selection (except for Bucket and Touch of course)...The Other One is very nice once they get settled into a groove…a tasty Rat…unless I am missing something, i don’t hear Jerry using any effects at all for the entire show (???)...what a great show!

thanks for the replies CPW...will be watching for your posts so i don't miss any addendums...cheers!

thanks sun, nice review + reply.

Fogerty would have been a good choice for a regular guest with the Dead.
Eventually they might have stretched the songs out, 20 min. versions as you suggest, just imagine!
